Foster-focused rescue group saves dogs and cats from underserved shelters

SFC Virginia is a foster-focused animal rescue group in Spotsylvania, VA. Founded in July 2019 with the goal of saving dogs and cats from rural and otherwise underserved shelters across the state, SFC strives to provide quality medical care including vaccinations and spay/neuter surgeries, and to find permanent adoptive homes for pets in need. SFC works to make a positive contribution to the overall live-release rate in Virginia and toward No-Kill Nation.

"Thank you again for SFC Virginia’s $5,000 award received in December. Your support kept our transport program running without interruption during a busy first quarter season and produced immediate, measurable results across under-resourced communities in Southwest and Central Virginia.

Since receipt of this grant, we have completed 11 transport runs, providing approximately 509 animals with a “freedom ride” into foster homes, veterinary care, and eventually forever homes! Of those animals, roughly 337 were dogs and 172 were cats.

The runs connected dozens of municipal sending shelters in Southwest Virginia, such as Henry-Martinsville SPCA, Twin County Humane, Russell County, Franklin County, and Pittsylvania Pet Center, with rescues across the Fredericksburg area, including us at SFC as well as Old Dominion Humane Society, Salty Paws Brigade, Petty Pawz, and Sympathetic Animal Rescue, who lack transport capabilities of their own and rely on us to move their animals to safety.

The Rota Foundation funds covered essential transport costs, including fuel, vehicle maintenance, monthly sanitation and deep-cleaning supplies to ensure all transport vehicles and crates remain clean and disease-free.

The grant also covered a significant repair when one of our small transport vans suffered a catastrophic A/C compressor failure while a volunteer was driving dogs to an adoption event. Helping us with that major repair prevented canceled runs and helped protect our ability to keep our commitments to our shelter partners.

Additionally, the award supported weekly spay/neuter trips to our veterinarians, with an average of about 40 dogs per week, as well as smaller runs to local veterinarians and lower-volume shelter transport. We are grateful for your support!"
