Volunteers rescue cats and kittens from “death row” in Georgia

Based in Douglas County Georgia, PPCR is a fully volunteer nonprofit that rescues unwanted and abandoned cats and kittens from local animal shelters, the majority of them from “Death Row.”

We are sharing our story of Waffle House Wanda with photos. Because of The Rota Foundation’s support, Wanda and others were saved from euthanasia at area shelters. Wanda, with her loving nature, always wanted to be petted. I had the honor of caring for her and witnessing her transition from so frail to a healthy cat ready for her new home.

There are those cats who touch your heart, and Wanda was one of them. I am so grateful that Wanda's story didn't end and we were able to save her.

The Resilient Journey of Waffle House Wanda

Waffle House Wanda’s journey began on a euthanasia list at an area shelter. Wanda was found wandering alone and in desperate need of help by a good samaritan.

Purrfect Peaches Cat Rescue was contacted. Wanda was immediately transferred because the shelter wasn't equipped for her urgent medical needs. She was quickly taken to our veterinarian. At 13 years old, Wanda was frail, thin, unspayed, and pregnant. She needed urgent dental surgery.

Despite everything, Wanda’s spirit remained unbroken. Even on her first day in rescue, in her frail, sickly condition, Wanda was sweet and affectionate with everyone she met. After several weeks in our medical area receiving high-calorie meals, medications, and daily care, she grew stronger, gained weight, and eventually joined the other cats in our free-roam room.

We worried that Wanda’s age might make it difficult to find her a home, but her story of resilience touched exactly the right heart. An application arrived sooner than we ever expected, and today, this senior survivor has found her forever home.

We are very grateful for the $2,000 grant you gave to support Purrfect Peaches. It is funders like you that help us make a difference in the lives we save. We are one of the few rescues that save cats that have medical needs. Shelters euthanize these animals because of the inability to give them the medical care they need.
